Fido & Felix Insider Tips

“Taking Care of Mans Best Friends”

Here are some great tips from us and others on how to have a successful "Fido & Felix" workshop and great guest experience!

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR USING THE KIT

  • If you're not holding a class and want a small version to make for yourself, consider purchasing a small DIY Kit that includes a recipe sheet, label sheet and the bottles you need to make all the blends.
  • Make diffuser bombs by simply putting the essential oils [only] into 1/4 drams. When you’re ready to diffuse, simply pour it into your diffuser along with water. Always leave a door open for your pet to come and go as they please.
  • Make up the entire kit and sell them to a Veterinarian so they can retail them or set up a table at an animal adoption event, flea market or craft fair.
  • Donate them to kennels, shelters or rescues.

CREATIVE CLASS IDEAS

  • Towards the end of your teaching segment on essential oils, offer those that are purchasing an enrollment kit, one free recipe of their choice.
  • Setup a different class each week and charge accordingly. EX: Week 1 you only do “Bugs” recipe. Determine your rate for that specific recipe and let people know ahead of time what you’ll be making and the cost. Week 2 is “Itch”, etc. You can also offer those that enroll get one free
  • Use the "Essential Oils for Dogs & Cats" Tear Sheets that comes with 25 sheets chock full of information as a handout for your class.
  • Gift a kit to your downline to encourage them to host a class!
  • Make up the entire kit and offer it as a free incentive with a large enrollment kit purchase!

WHERE TO BUY ITEMS
Most of these items are available at your local health food store, but you can also purchase online at Amazon or Vitacost:

  • Colloidal Silver - antibacterial, antifungal, helps prevent infections
  • Apple Cider Vinegar (with mother) - antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, etc
  • Aloe Vera Juice - anti-inflammatory, skin soothing, reduces redness and itchiness. Some antiseptic properties
  • Alcohol Free Witch Hazel - anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties
  • Dish soap - to help disperse the oil in the solution

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

  • Do you know if the dish soap in the "bugs" blend would interfere with topical flea/tick meds (prevention)? I know soap strips oils, so is there a recommendation for which dish soap?
Any dish soap is fine. Dr Roark does not recommend using oils topically within 7 days of a topical flea/tick treatment.
  • And these are all perfectly safe for pets? Are there specifics on animal size? We aren't going to have to worry about someone from our class saying their pet had an adverse reaction?
You should always consult with your veterinarian if you are concerned with using essential oils with your pet. Most of the recipes are extremely diluted so an adverse reaction is unlikely.
  • Roman Chamomile is not available anywhere - any suggestions?
You can either omit it or use Frankincense.
  • Is there something in the kit for dogs with bad allergies and ear infections/yeast infections?
We have something called "Seasonal Threats" but nothing for the ears.
  • Is there a recipe for fleas and/or hot spots?
the "Bugs" would be for fleas and "Cuts" would be for hot spots.
  • If you make a spray bottle and someone wants to buy it from you... what's the average selling price?
I would say from $12 and up.
  • For the Seasonal Threats, would that included rashes?
Yes, or the "Itch" spray. You could try either to see what your pet responds to best.
  • What do you mean apple cider vinegar with mother?
It will say on the outside of the bottle something like, "Includes Mother" or "With the Mother". The Mother gives ACV a murky, cloudy, cob-web like appearance and contains beneficial enzymes, friendly bacteria and proteins.
  • Where can I purchase Colloidal Silver or Apple Cider Vinegar?
Most local health food stores or Amazon will have these items.
  • Does it matter the ppm of the colloidal silver? I am finding they are anywhere from 5ppm to 30ppm
Usually 5-20 is normal, try to get the smallest particle size. ppm is concentration. Which really doesn't matter that much. 0.0005 microns is a particle size. Ultimately, it doesn't matter that much what kind of CS they get.

12 Sprays of Christmas Insider Tips

“It's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas!”

Here are some great tips from us and others on how to have a successful "12 Sprays of Christmas" workshop and great guest experience!

ADDITIVES

We all know from basic chemistry that water and oil don't mix or solubilize. We wanted to address what to add to your "12 Sprays of Christmas" room sprays to enjoy them for the season. It is ideal for any water-based and essential oil spray to address the following 3 factors:

  1. Suspension - this keeps the spray in the air longer
  2. Soluble - this keeps the chemicals combined in a solution, so they don't separate.
  3. Preservative - inhibits microbial growth.

For a 2 oz spray, keep the main ratios at approximately 75% [distilled] water and 25% ethanol. To help suspend the scent longer in the air, keep it soluble and inhibit growth in the solution, we recommend the following:

  • Add in 1 Tbsp of Vodka that is at least 151 proof and high enough in ethanol Everclear® 190 proof Vodka is best. Read more on this here.
  • Special Denatured Alcohol (SDA) can also be used in place of Vodka, but is harder to come by.
  • Be sure to use Distilled Water. Most tap water has fluoride, chlorine and other trace minerals and/or chemicals that aren't in distilled water. These additives mix with the essential oils, and can produce undesired results when diffusing or using in sprays. Therefore, we DO NOT recommend using tap water.

We DO NOT recommend using Witch Hazel as this is another water-based medium that can change the scent of the entire blend and won't inhibit bacterial growth.

We DO NOT recommend using Salt, as this is only a preservative and will do nothing to help keep the blend mixed or suspend the scent.

CREATIVE CLASS IDEAS

  • Towards the end of your teaching segment on essential oils, offer those that are purchasing an enrollment kit, one free recipe of their choice.
  • Setup a different class each week doing a countdown to Christmas and charge accordingly. EX: Week 1 you only do "Gifts of the Magi" recipe. Determine your rate for that specific recipe and let people know ahead of time what you'll be making and the cost. Week 2 is "Dashing Through the Pines", etc. You can also offer those that enroll get one free.
  • Use the “Holiday Essentials” Tear Sheet that comes with 25 sheets chock full of information as a handout for your class.
  • Gift a kit to your downline to encourage them to host a class!
  • Make up the entire kit and offer it as a free incentive with a large enrollment kit purchase!

MAKE & TAKE WORKSHOP TIPS

  • For maximum attendance at your event, personally hand out the invitations 1-2 weeks prior to your event. A day prior to the event, be sure to call, email or text a reminder of the date and time to all those invited to get a final head count.
  • Squeeze bottles are perfect for dispensing the distilled water into the spray bottles.
  • It‘s always a good idea to have additional materials on hand for a successful workshop. (see “Materials Not Included” below)
  • Have cotton balls out for guests to spray scent into and sample.
  • To offset your costs, have extra supplies (spray bottles, labels, lid stickers, etc) available for your guests to purchase.

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR USING THE KIT

  • If you're not holding a class and want a small version to make for yourself, consider purchasing a small DIY Kit that includes a recipe sheet, label sheet and the bottles you need to make all the blends.
  • Make diffuser bombs by simply putting the oils only into 1/4 drams. Add a “12 Sprays of Christmas” Lid Sticker to the top to know what’s inside. When you're ready to diffuse, simply pour it into your diffuser along with water for instant holiday cheer!
  • Make up the entire kit and sell them at a flea market or craft fair.
  • Donate them to those less fortunate, group homes, nursing homes, etc.

Using Essential Oils with Children

Children can also reap the rewards of using essential oils with a few safety precautions and research you'll be on your way to natural solutions for your kids!

Some great places to continue researching essential oils are: WebMD and MedicineNet

Here are a few simple safety rules when using essential oils with children:

  1. Do not use on infants under 24 months unless under the advice of a Certified Aromatherapist or Medical Doctor.
  2. Do not use internally unless under the advice of a Certified Aromatherapist or Medical Doctor. Also, do not use essential oils in the mouth for teething.
  3. Consult your doctor or a Certified Aromatherapist prior to using oils if you have an existing health condition, take medication, are pregnant or nursing.
  4. Photosensitization and phototoxicity can occur when certain essential oils, primarily citrus oils, are exposed to UV light – whether from sunlight or tanning beds. Reactions such as blistering, severe sunburn, changes to skin color or swelling can occur when applying phototoxic oils and then spending time in UV light. You can be susceptible for sometimes up to 72 hours after using certain oils; and therefore should stay out of the sun or cover your skin. Reactions can be temporary or permanent and may not present themselves immediately.
  5. Prior to diffusing oils in an area where a child is asthmatic or epileptic, research what oils are safe.

More safety tips and more can be found in our "Using Essential Oils with Kids" Tear Sheet Pads.

Essential Oils to AVOID

  • Anise (under age 5 which includes during pregnancy and when breastfeeding)
  • Birch
  • Clary Sage
  • Fennel (under age 5 which includes during pregnancy and when breastfeeding)
  • Hyssop
  • Idaho Tansy
  • Peppermint (under age 3)
  • Wintergreen

Under Age 3

  • Eucalyptus (only at 0.5% dilution or less)

Over Age 3

  • Eucalyptus (only at 1% dilution or less)
  • Peppermint (only at 1% dilution or less)

Safer Alternatives to Peppermint or Eucalyptus: Pine, Spruce

Precautions for Children and Pregnant or Nursing Mothers using Fennel Essential Oil
Alarming, yet interesting reads about Fennel Essential Oil which is a known convulsant [1, 2, 3, 7] and hormone modulator that should be avoided all together if pregnant, nursing or in children under 6 [3, 4, 5, 6, 7].

Doctors won't place nursing mothers on birth control containing estrogen since it alters hormones; Fennel also can alter hormones. The capability for Fennel to increase milk production is a moot point as safety of baby and mother outweigh the potential benefit. A safe option would be Basil Essential Oil.

Other known essential oil convulsants [2] include but are not limited to: eucalyptus, fennel, hyssop, pennyroyal, rosemary, sage, savin, tansy, thuja, turpentine, and wormwood.

Just remember, just because essential oils are made from plants (as Alcohol and Tobacco are) doesn't mean they cannot harm you. Research what oil you want to use prior to using it. We recommend Robert Tisserand's Essential Oil Safety.

These tips and more can be found in our "Using Essential Oils with Kids" Tear Sheet Pads.
